These important features of oncolytic HSV G47Δ enhanced its antitumor immune responses when treating advanced tumors, especially those with few treatment options. To date, there have been no reports of cancer-cell crossresistance to chemotherapy and oHSV. Craig Duvall, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering, and his colleagues in the Advanced Therapeutics Laboratory at Vanderbilt University are developing nanoparticle drug delivery systems to overcome these and other pharmacological barriers. In the U.S., a Massachusetts-based biotechnology firm named BioVex is testing a modified version of herpes in patients with stages III and IV of melanoma. This gene therapy does not require the induction of lymphocytes which specifically recognize the tumor cells expressing the cancer antigens inside the body, and enables to prepare the lymphocytes already having cytotoxicity against tumor cells specific for the cancer antigens ex vivo.
