After graduating from Fairfax High School in 1952, he joined the United States Army and frequently performed at military ceremonies. In 1968, A&M reissued the open reel tape (OR-4112) with an altered track sequence to balance the running times of the two sides. A painter for over four decades, Alpert’s bold, abstract expressionist canvases have been exhibited internationally and are a part of the permanent collections of MoCA Museum in L.A. S.R.O. Q. Alpert provides lead vocals on “The Christmas Song” and “The Bell That Couldn’t Jingle,” and there are also appearances by a studio choir and string instruments, arranged by Shorty Rogers. He was also a key member of Julius Wechter’s Baja Marimba Band (their tribute to him, “For Bud”, was featured on their 1968 album, Do You Know the Way To San Jose).
His fans not only appreciate his own compositions, they appreciate his unique arrangements of popular songs. I was fortunate. It became an iconic jazz sound. It was at this time that Alpert formed the public version of the Tijuana Brass which included: Pisano, Edmondson, Nick Ceroli (drums), Pat Senatore (bass), Tonni Kalash (trumpet), Lou Pagani (piano) as well as Julius Wechter on marimba and vibes (studio only). He had made early attempts at performing while he was working at the Paramount, forming a vocal duo with his friend Jerry Smith and singing close harmonies in the style of the Everly Brothers. Whatever trepidations one might have about Alpert participating in the project, some of the best cuts on the set work best because he’s on them — the title cut (Marinelli) “El Garbanzo” (M,M&W), and “Peanuts” (Marinelli) — in part because Alpert’s gotten a lot funkier in his old age. “Up Cherry Street” is the only song that comes close to the old TJB boisterness of the 60’s. This is my favorite album cover ever-taken into consideration when given stars! About all that remains of the TJB is Alpert’s familiar trumpet, which often hearkens back to his ’60s manner in this gleaming setting. The plan was to become a jazz musician, but an Army stint turned that idea into a two-year bugle-blowing exercise.
