Repsol and Irving Oil officially opened Canada’s first liquefied natural gas terminal officially opened Thursday in Saint John, New Brunswick and the first LNG terminal to be built on the east coast of North America in 30 years. Canaport LNG will receive LNG tankers year round and is capable of shipping more than a billion cubic feet of natural gas daily through a 145 km pipeline to the US - enough to heat and power 5 million homes.
Repsol’s Chairman, Antonio Brufau was quoted:
“The Canaport LNG terminal commissioning demonstrates Repsol’s commitment to the LNG business.”
Daniel Goodman, a spokesperson for Irving was quoted:
“If the markets were to grow, if the opportunities were to arise, we could expand this plant. We’ve also talked about and we’re looking at the possibility of a co-generation power plant that would be very efficient.”
This is a very important element to the natural gas business, and the east coast. The next to open will hopefully be Kitimat LNG completing a west-east coast LNG system for Canada and provide vital distribution points for international natural gas trade.
