The Province of British Columbia  announced today it is investing $187 million over four years to upgrade the Sierra Yoyo Desan Road that leads to one of North America’s most spectacular natural gas plays – the Horn River Basin. The project is expected to  create over 1,150 direct jobs according to Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Minister Blair Lekstrom who stated:

“The Sierra Yoyo Desan road is a very successful, award-winning P3 partnership agreement. This road provides industry and resource access to the Horn River Basin, which has attracted investment to the tune of $1.1 billion in the past year, a significant portion of the record $2.66 billion earned from oil and gas rights sales in 2008.”

In a press conference held with Fort Nelson Mayor Bill Streeper, Mr. Lekstrom  went on to state:

“With this new play [Horn River], it’s estimated that in 2009 there will be close to 100 [additional] shale-gas wells alone, and the estimate goes up to between 300 and 800 [shale-gas wells] by 2011. It’s significant.”

Improved infrastructure will reduce the costs associated with drilling in the Horn River basin and will increase year round access. Industry players welcomed the news. EnCana Corp. vice-president Richard Dunn said in an interview;

“It allows for year-round access into our areas of activity, which helps with planning, with employment for the local service sector.”
